‘I have a cheap $50 engagement ring – and I want to swap it out for a family heirloom’

A woman has expressed her desire to replace her inexpensive wedding ring with a family heirloom.
Due to the rising cost of living, people are spending less on wedding rings. According to The Lux Insider, over the past decade, people have been spending 19 percent less on wedding bands.
The woman, who shared her story on Mumsnet, was given a cheap ring by her fiance and wanted something more luxurious. She decided to wear an 18-carat yellow gold heirloom from her late grandmother instead of her current tungsten carbide ring worth around $50.
However, when she told her husband about her decision, he disagreed.
“My grandparent’s marriage lasted 68 years until her death at 90,” she wrote.
“I really look up to them as a model of commitment and the meaning of marriage. I’d like to get the ring cleaned and resized slightly and wear it in place of my very cheap wedding ring, in memory of my nan and of commitment to my marriage.”
She added that her husband couldn’t explain why he didn’t want her to wear her grandmother’s ring, other than it wasn’t the one she got married with. Despite not minding the cheap ring, she felt her husband shouldn’t be so attached to it because of its low cost.
Commenters suggested she could wear her grandmother’s ring on her right hand and keep her husband’s ring on her left. However, she dismissed this idea, stating she simply didn’t want to do that.
One individual responded: “A wedding ring is a commitment, not an accessory.”
Another person chimed in with: “It’s just a ring, who cares.”
