STD
(sexually transmitted disease) as t
he label does not beat around the bush but outright states,
"For the Successful Treatment of Gonorrhea".
That's one of the things that make this such a desirable bottle as most of these old STD cures do not say what they were for because the person using did not want anyone to know.  Like the old song says, "If it wasn't for Cotton Eyed Joe I'd a-been married a long time ago".   When we first got a carton of of these bottles they were in varying stages of break-down.   They came out of the dingy basement of an age-old drug store and though a few of them were nearly perfect, down to the red and black 'seal' or label, over the cork, most of them were not.  This one was still corked with well preserved contents but the label was pretty faded and ragged so we made copies of a few of the nice labels and used them to fix some of the other's up.  In the process of cleaning this one up we put a bead of white glue around the cork since the contents were preserved so well, down to the paper-wad that was between the cork and the contents.
NOTE that the last two pictures show one of these bottles as you normally see them, to give an idea of what it looks like on its own, embossing, etc.
We have found these little bottles in different areas and in some of these occurrences, it was not just one, but a few or more were found together, left behind by a desperate user who was trying to get cured of a socially unacceptable disease.   More than one of these areas was behind a 19-teenth century 'FB' as the maps call them, Female Boarding House!  And they do not discriminate, they have also been found on the 'other side of the tracks', behind the homes of folks who were civic leaders and prominent citizens at the time they were discarding these bottles!  And they are sometimes found alongside other bottles used to treat the same affliction; bottles embossed Injection Brou and Knoxit, to name a few.   Anyway, a very nice example of a bottle that was used to treat an STD, and an example that clearly states this,
