M
old (
BIM
) bottle with a tooled-top, dating it back to the 1880s era
.
Bottle embossed
:  "
PENDLETON PANACEA COY / ROCKLAND ME. / ST. JOHN N.B.
"   NOTE that after the word PANACEA it has the letters COY ???     It must be a spelling error, a mold-maker's attempt to
abbreviate the word COMPANY when he found that he'd run out of space
for the whole word?
Condition
:
This bottle is in SHINY CLEAN condition.   It has some content stain and outside wear and haze - from age and use but nothing significant.   It has NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc.   PLEASE SEE picture for overall idea of bottle's condition
.
Age
:
An early hand-blown bottle (Blown-In-Mold = BIM) with a tooled-top, ca. late
1800's
.
Shipping
:
All DOMESTIC shipping charges INCLUDE insurance. We have enjoyed shipping our items all over the world and are happy to offer most of our items to international buyers. Yet insuring International parcels is very expensive so PLEASE NOTE; we do NOT insure International orders unless winning buyer specifically requests this and we are able to provide an insurance quote. We do not falsify information on the Customs Form, such as a price other than what the actual purchase price is, so please do not request us to do so. We ship several times a week and send payment acknowledgments and shipping confirmations. Your prompt payment will assure a very quick turn-around time.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If our shipping charge is much more than the actual shipping cost, we will refund the excess so what YOU pay for shipping/insurance is very close to, if not exactly, the ACTUAL shipping costs! This is especially important for foreign buyers to know as most of our foreign shipping charges are rough estimates
.
What makes this bottle scarce is that it is an odd 'ST JOHN'S NEW
BRUNSWICK
' embossed variant.  A digger
acquaintance
of mine in Maine notes that out of the many of these bottles that he's seen and found,
this one is
unique
with the St. John's New Brunswick, embossed.
Here's what he said about this ione, and I quote, "
I've dug literally hundreds of these (when you do hit them in a site, they are usually in numbers, which means opiate) there's about 5 common variants.
THIS one, I have never seen
, and I've been collecting Maine bottles since 1976
".
Note too the PANACEA COY (?) embossing?   Obviously PANACEACOY isn't a word in the dictionary so it appears that the mold-ma
ker ran out of space to add the word COMPANY (Pendleton's Panacea
Company
) so they just squeezed in the word COY instead of company.  Besides that it is
one of the few antique bottles that has the word "PANACEA" embossed on it.  The word
PANACEA
sums up a quack medicine so perfectly, the simple definition is: "
Something that will make everything about a situation better
",
and the full definition is:
"
A remedy for all ills or difficulties : cure-all
". What a great word choice for selling a quack medicine!  A panacea was a remedy for
ALL
ills, that pretty much says it
ALL
!   The side affect was that a panacea often contained a narcotic ingredient that would make everything a little better, the after effects of ingesting a narcotic like opium, morphine cocaine, heroin, and the like.
Back in the day nothing would of worked as quick as a narcotic to relieve
aches and pains and that knowledge was well exploited by the patent medicine industry.   And the practice of lacing a medicine with a heavy narcotic is one of the reasons for the formation of the Pure Food and Drug Administration who put the kibosh on this kind of drug abuse.  This is a UNIQUE bottle with the New Brunswick embossing, a scarce little bottle that had a short life
