Description
Rumford Chemical Works – 5½ inch teal blue octagonal cork bottleCa. 1890s bottle, in very good condition
Up for bid is a very nice dark teal blue
Rumford Chemical Works
octagonal bottle that is 5½ inches tall, with a cork lip finish.
As shown in the pictures, it has “RUMFORD CHEMICAL WORKS” over a “W” molded into one of the panels.
This was manufactured ca. later 1880s – late 1890s) based on the historic development of the Rumford bottles coupled with the manufacturing techniques used with this bottle.
It is in very nice condition throughout, with no chips or cracks, and minimal use wear.
This bottle would have held held “Acid Phosphate”.
One spoon of this powder was mixed with cold water and sugar to make a lemon-lime type drink which was to be taken for nervous exhaustion, etc.
Sorry – but this wonderful tonic is not included in the bottle!

Some manufacturing details (for those who care – and these reflect the age of the bottle).
It was blown in a cup-bottom mold (with an embossed “19” on the base – see photo).
The mold seams extend from the ‘cup’ to the base of the bottle neck.
The neck and lip were finished by hand with a lipping tool; this bottle has a standard tooled finish.
This method of manufacture was superseded by the fully automatic machine made bottles – which were introduced in 1905.
With the “standard” tooled finish, which usually predates the “improved” tooled finish (which became widespread in the late 1890s), this bottle was likely made ca. later 1880s to late 1890s.
