    Description

    SINGLETON’S “GOLDEN” EYE OINTMENT
Here is a nice English Victorian era stoneware eye ointment base I had dug in a tip (dump) years ago.  The lettering on the salve base is incised

    Singleton's Golden Eye Ointment
    ,”
    and filled
with delft blue color.  Measures approximately 1-3/4 in diameter and 5/8” tall.  The pedestal is in excellent condition!
The earliest eye ointment pedestals, date from around 1830’s.  The earliest Singleton's pedestals bore the name
    “Singleton's Golden Eye Ointment,”
however around the late 1890’s the use of the word, "Golden" was dropped.  Originally, the ointment was placed on top of the pedestal and covered with a waxed paper seal to protect the ointment and were sold in a cardboard box with a drawing of the ointment base.  The advertising read,
“ An Absolute Specific / Price 2/9 / For All Eye Troubles & Diseases.”
