Description
I am currently listing one of my better dug bottles after seeing one identical sell last month for crazy money! All embossed on the front panel: "Dr. WOODRUFF'S/ DYSENTERY/ CORDIAL" Base has an open pontil. It stands 7 1/8" tall by 2 1/4" x 1 5/8" with an applied tapered top. It is listed in "Digger Odell's Pontil Medicine Encyclopedia," page 263 as follows: "Michael Woodruff, physician, Columbus Georgia. Advertised 1846-47, for dysentery, diarrhea, gripping pains, summer complaint of children (not clear if for the children or those around them!) MFA, May 20th, 1847.Dr. WOODRUFF'S// DYSENTERY// CORDIAL
//
COLUMBUS, GA."
aqua and is 9" tall. (The double lines indicate a new panel for each consecutive piece of embossing indicating this was embossed on all four sides.) This example, like the one sold last month at GWA is embossed on the front panel only and missing the "Columbus. Ga." embossing. This was likely an earlier example as the GWA example was the only one known with any auction record. The auction was auction #151, lot #258, ended on 7/20/21 and winning bid was 00, not including buyers premium, tax and shipping. Listing reads, "Georgia, circa 1840-1850. aqua, 7 1/4" high, applied tapered collar mouth. Lightly cleaned to near perfect condition. Extremely rare with no auction record. Michael Woodruff was a physician in Columbus, Georgia in the 1840's." This is certainly one hard to find bird as I dug this back in 2012 and have had a search on for another one and never a hit until I came across the one on Glass Works Auction last month. That one was nicely pro cleaned, this one is old school cleaned which has some haze and minor residue from being buried, along with some minor scratches, mostly on the backside that would likely disappear altogether with a good tumble. There is the tiniest lip flea nibble and a possible associated bruise that may just be iridescent staining. I am having trouble seeing the smallest issues these days so I am just saying it might or might not be. So small I can't even get a clear picture of it. Really is presentable as is, no chips or other issues. The two lines that appear along the pontil are in the making and not cracks or after damage at all. These digital cameras these days tend to exaggerate manufacturing flaws to look like damage. It is here for sale for those who helped bid up the last one without the add-on costs, which would have bumped it up to somewhere north of 00! This one starting at a fraction of that and no reserve! You will have my standard guarantee of your satisfaction for any or no reason or full refund upon return. Also I will offer free shipping on this item with full insurance coverage. Thanks for looking and keep watching for more as I continue to thin out my collection of 57 years.
