This is not a commonly seen bottle, but a rarer old antique INDIAN LINIMENT bottle. The Eno or Enoke, also called
Wyanoak, was an American Indian tribe located in North Carolina during the 17th and 18th centuries
that was later absorbed into the Catawba and/or the Saponi tribes. Back in the day when this bottle was in circulation,
the Native American Indian was looked upon with aura and mystique. Many early-day patent medicine men used them as a symbol to sell their medicines and suggested that the 'Indian' medicines held secret age-old formulas that had been concocted over the centuries by the Native American
. The Indian cures, bitters, liniments, sarsaparilla's, patent medicines, were often advertised as containing some kind of miraculous healing powers from natural ingredients that were extracted from different roots and herbs that the Native American Indians had used for centuries to cure such things.
In reality
, the
products were actually 'developed' by a patent medicine man back in the e
astern U.S.A.,
using these Native American connotations as an allure to sell their concoction.
In this case there was even a "DR PARK'S" whose title and name somehow validates the product and gives the liniment a medically correct sounding endorsement.
This Indian Liniment was probably an herbal based concoction with alcohol and aromatic oil, maybe a sprig of herbs and minerals and possibly even a narcotic ingredients and there you have it. "Wyandoke Indian Liniment"
, enough said! Most of the early patent medicine bottles you see are
aqua marine in color,
but this one is a DEEP AMETHYST, dark purple color.
You hear about old bottles turning purple from the sun. This bottle was exposed to a light / heat source to enrich the purple color that would naturally occur if exposed to the ultra violet rays of the sun for a prolonged period of time. Note that with a clear glass bottle you hold it up to the light to see through it and read the embossing, and the embossing reflects what ever patterns and colors are in the background. Yet with this deep purple color, you are looking, not through the glass but right AT the embossing, which accentuates it and makes it much more visible!
The purple color also authenticates it as being truly antique as with few exceptions, only bottles produced prior to the 1915 era will even turn this color
