    Description

Very rare and beautiful, ca1905 Tin Lithographed, Vienna Art Plate-type Advertising Tray featuring a beautiful Art Noveau image of a beautiful young woman clad in a low cut, gauzy gown that exposes much of her chest and her left shoulder. The Tray advertises J. L. Turner & Son – in 1904 the second oldest continuous running business in the Dakotas.
This fantastic and exceptionally rare, chromolithograph on tin Art Plate / Advertising Tray measures approx. 10" in diameter and pictures the beautiful young woman with a sprig of holly in her hair. She wears a very low cut, pink dress and stares dreamily to the right. The rim of the Tray features an Art Nouveau style design with images of urns of fruit and foliage.
Advertising text on the back of the Tray reads "J. M. Turner & Son, Inc. / Dealers in General Merchandise. / Springfield, S. Dak.”
Although the Tray does not carry a manufacturer’s mark, it is documented to have been manufactured by Charles Shonk of Chicago as one of their Royal Saxony Art Plates and designated by collectors as “No. 104A – Poesie”.
The 1904 "Biographies from History of South Dakota" by Doane Robinson biography of John L. Turner reads in part: "John L. Turner is the oldest merchant in the state of South Dakota save for one exception, retaining his residence and business headquarters in the attractive town of Springfield, Bon Homme county, is a scion of a family which has been identified with the annals of American history from the early colonial epoch, and is himself a native of Geneseo, Livingston county, New York, where he was born on the 26th of August, 1843.... He remained at the parental home until he had attained the age of twenty-two years and... after the death of his father until 1867, when he removed to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he resided until 1870, giving his attention to property interests of the estate in that locality. In the year last mentioned (1870) he cast in his lot with what is now the state of South Dakota, coming to Springfield and here establishing himself in the general merchandise business. About three years later he became associated with Henry E. Bonesteel in the prosecution of the enterprise, under the firm name of Bonesteel & Turner and this partnership obtained for a quarter of a century, being dissolved in 1898, after which John W. Turner, the son of our subject, became associated with him in the business, proving an able coadjutor, and the enterprise has since been continued under the firm name of J. L.Turner & Son. The business has grown to extensive proportions, drawing its trade from a wide radius of contiguous country, while the stock carried is select and comprehensive and the firm is one whose reputation for reliability and fair dealing is of the highest. Mr. Turner is also the owner and operator of the Artesian roller mills in Springfield, and for many years he also conducted a drug store in the town, having recently disposed of this branch of his business."
This rare and very beautiful, Vienna Art Plate-type Advertising Tray / Plaque is in very good and excellent, original condition. The colors are bright and vibrant - rich and warm and no significant surface scratches, surface loss or damage of any kind even to the edges of the rolled rim. There are a few tiny and unobtrusive surface nicks, light surface scuffs and some light and unobtrusive surface crazing. Overall the Tray is very well preserved and displays beautifully.
A very beautiful and very rare, ca1905 Tin Lithographed, Vienna Art Plate-type Advertising Tray for an early Dakota General Merchandise Store and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
