Description
This is a most handsome and venerable figure of the "Healing Buddha" or, more properly, Bhaisajyaguru, cast in bronze in Tibet in the 1800s. The previous owner thought him older, but I tend to be more conservative in dating. He is 11 1/2 inches Tall. His full title in Tibetan is Bhaisajyaguru vaiduryaprabha tathagata, "The Radiant Lapis Lazuli Master of Healing Buddha". He is revered in the Mahayana Buddhism of Tibet as the supreme dispenser of longevity, protection from disasters and the transmutation of negative states of mind, as all illnesses in Buddhism, by virtue of their karmic origin, are considered, to some extent, psychosomatic. BUDDHA:
Antique Tibetan Shakyamuni Healing Buddha, Bronze, 1800's,
Great Patina
This is a most handsome and venerable figure of the "Healing Buddha" or, more properly,
Bhaisajyaguru
, cast in bronze in Tibet in the 1800s. The previous owner thought him older, but I tend to be more conservative in dating. He is 11 1/2 inches Tall.
Below is a photo of his with a standard, 1 1/2 inch tall, shot glass, to give some idea of his proportions:
His full title in Tibetan is
Bhaisajyaguru vaiduryaprabha tathagata,
"The Radiant Lapis Lazuli Master of Healing Buddha". He is revered in the Mahayana Buddhism of Tibet as the supreme dispenser of longevity, protection from disasters and the transmutation of negative states of mind, as all illnesses in Buddhism, by virtue of their karmic origin, are considered, to some extent, psychosomatic.
Bhaisajyaguru
is typically depicted seated, wearing the robes of a Buddhist monk, holding a jar of medicine nectar in his left hand and the right hand resting on his right knee, holding the stem of the Aruna fruit or Myrobalan between thumb and forefinger. But not always.
Our Buddha is seated holding a jar of healing nectar in his lap with his left hand, but nothing is in his right hand, Southeast Asian artists are notable for the freedom with which they portray the various aspects of the Buddha. What is essential in a Healing Buddha is the jar of healing, the plant is often missing as in the following two examples:
Kon-do: The Hall of
Medicine Buddha
in Toji Temple Standing Medicine Buddha in a private collection
Our Buddha is seated in
padmasana,
or the full lotus position, an
asana. or posture,
usually reserved for images of the Buddha after his enlightenment,.
Our Buddha holds the jar of Amitra, the nectar of healing and longevity, with both hands. He has the three rings at his neck which mark him as a
mahapursa,
an individual of great spiritual wisdom.
He has the three rings at his neck whcih mark him as a
mahapursa
, or individual of great spiritual wisdom.
And he also has a beautiful spiral
urna
on his forehead, symbolic of a kind of third eye with which he is able to see past this world of suffering,
samsara
, into the world of enlightenment.
His garment is emblazoned with the famous Buddhis auspicious symbols. Their actual origin is lost in deep antiquity, but we know that some of them originated in Tibet. For believers, as focal points of meditation and contemplation, these symbols have to do with future success, spiritual victories and favorable happenings to come.
The design and appearance of these symbols can vary from one iteration to another and sometimes they are difficult to identify. That is the case with our present Buddha. For while the Endless Knot, the Golden Fish and the Parasol are easily identified, the others are not quite so clear. The difficulty in identifying the symbols adds a bit of mystery to the figure.
Below is a detail of his back where the endless Knot, the Parasol and the Two Golden Fish appear:
The two things I love most about this figure are the incredibly
beautiful patina and the exquisite modeling of his face.
This Buddha is cast from the most delicate light honey-colored bronze, very unusual.
But it is this Buddha's face which sets him apart from others. He has the typical Tibetan sweetness with his gentle smile, but his arched eyebrows are unusually accentuated and his downcast eyes and gentle mouth are exquisitely modeled. There is a certain cheerful openness to his expression which seems to invite communion with him.
Our Buddha is 11 1/2 inches tall. There is no serious damage to the figure and the surface is completely stable with no powdering or flaking. The bottom of the figure is open and the tempered core of sand and clay has long fallen away. This figure is heavily cast as are many of these earlier figures
The photos give an excellent idea of the beauty and finesse of this wonderful example of Sacred Tibetan Art.

And thanks for looking.
Due to limitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the Buddha himself, but I did my best to capture him as he is. And, at least on my monitor, the color is a very good match.
A MESSAGE TO MY CLIENTS
I have been diagnosed with indolent b-cell Lymphoma, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
and a couple of other things
which is not good, but it could be worse.
The lymphoma which had been napping for a while on my spine has begun to migrate to other lymph nodes around my body and I fear it has awakened from its slumber.
I mention this just to beg a little leeway in the shipping department.
But I will continue to deaccession items from my collections as much as possible. I have been a little sidetracked recently with this diagnosis, and subsequently required obedience to medical professionals.
I am also still disabled with a right arm and hand, formerly completely paralyzed, now just extremely disobedient and weak. They will not do what I desire them to do with the speed and accuracy I require.
This is slowing me down quite a bit, especially the packing up.
I do manage to get most items off in the four day handling time.
When I get one-handed packing down perfectly, I shall add it to my resume.
